Herbert's Obit

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Entered into rest at University Hospital on Monday, November 13, 2006, Judge Herbert E. Kernaghan, Jr., beloved husband of Jean Hartley Kernaghan of Augusta. Judge Kernaghan was born August 17, 1938 in Augusta, Ga. He did his undergraduate studies at Georgia Southern University and received his Juris Doctorate Degree from Walter F. George School of Law, Mercer University. He was a US Army Veteran, former Assistant State Court Solicitor, Past President Richmond County Jaycees, former Chairman of Richmond County Sheriff's Merit Board, former Director of Santa Claus Anonymous, former member of the Board of Directors of Augusta Cerebral Palsy, former member of the Richmond County Board of Elections, Board of Directors County Business Association and Advisory Board College of Business Administration Georgia Southern University. Judge Kernaghan served two terms as Chairman of Richmond County Republican Party. He was selected AugustaLegal Secretaries' Boss of the Year in 1981 and Jaycees' Outstanding Young Man of the Year in 1973. He was a member of Georgia Jaycees Rebel Corp., Hephzibah Agriculture Club, Augusta Bar Association, Georgia Bar Association, American Legion Post #63 and St. Marks United Methodist Church. He was a charter member of The Redneck Supper Club, Augusta Coliseum Authority and Georgia Southern University Boosters. Judge Kernaghan was appointed Public Defender in Richmond County Juvenile Court in 1988 and was currently serving as Chief Judge of Juvenile Court, Augusta Judicial Circuit. Additional survivors include his daughters, Heather K. Lavey and Dorothy K. Baez; sons, Trey H. Kernaghan, Keith Taylor and Mack Taylor; and ten grandchildren. A graveside service will be conducted in Magnolia Cemetery on Thursday, November 16, 2006, 2:00 p.m., with Rev. Gerald Varner and Rev. C.W. Edwards, Jr. officiating.
