Beginners' Tips On Tarot Readings

Tarot cards have been used for centuries to foretell how or if a certain event will come to pass in the future. I use tarot cards, along with some limited astrology work, as a tool with clients. Tarot cards are simply symbols of the unconscious mind, and as such, are highly effective helpers for inner exploration as well as more mundane situations such as career decisions, etc.

Often, beginners who are new to tarot find themselves overwhelmed by the thought of having to memorize the various meanings of 78 cards. It's important not to forget that there is more to reading the tarot than merely memorizing symbols and meanings. Oftentimes, the meanings of the cards will vary with their position in the spread. In my opinion, it's better to hone your intuition than to only concentrate on memorization. Sure, one can simply memorize all the card meanings, but usually this type of rote learning makes a reader who is as dry as a stack of multiplication flashcards.

Before anybody decides to hit me over the head with a bottle, let me say that I have spent years collecting and reading various reference books dealing with tarot symbolism. Even after 16 years of doing readings, I still sometimes stop to quickly research a particular nuance during a reading.

Tarot cards are a tool that gives us choices - They do not predict our fate, but show the most likely outcome of any proposed action. They're a perfect tool for making informed choices and adding to the decision making process. Yes, tarot is an amazing source of information....but how that information is utilized is ultimately up to us.
